KEMPEROL Waterproofing makes Cologne's Colonius fit for the future

With its 266-metre height, the Colonius television tower in Cologne is a Cologne landmark that cannot be overlooked. In addition, the "Tall One" supplies the entire region of Cologne and Bonn with digital terrestrial television programmes. Incidentally, the Colonius is the highest television tower in North Rhine-Westphalia and the seventh highest in the whole of Germany.

Its considerable height makes working on and around the building a challenge. The structure, which was erected in 1978, is to be protected against wind and weather in the future. For this purpose, DFMG Deutsche Funkturm GmbH commissioned the sealing of the subsoil of the large antenna platform at a height of 180 metres to protect it from moisture in the long term.

For the fabricator and KEMPER SYSTEM direct customers, the Werner Diener GmbH & Co. Industrieanstrich KG, an everyday undertaking and not for the faint-hearted - after all, the work carried out from May to October 2019 took place at a height of 180 metres. The challenge: to seal the 1,500 m² area, especially in view of the extreme weather conditions prevailing here, including possible ice impact.

In order to obtain a secure and permanently watertight seal, the company, which specialises in concrete repairs, first decided to remove the old seal down to the concrete and then shot-blast it. This was followed by priming with KEMPERTEC EP-Primer, afterwards the KEMPEROL BR M waterproofing (double-layered for safety) and finally the sanding by means of KEMCO NQ 0408 natural quartz.
